Bulking: causes e rimedies

Hi-tech Ambiente, in a recent issue, dedicates a full article to bulking, a frequent issue in the sludge plants, that could be caused by many factors.

Indeed, even though technology and plants structure are already well known, many dysfunctions persist, among which we can find the one related with the bad management of the plants. Among the most frequent diseases there is bulking, or swelling, that causes many problems in sludge sedimentation, preventing the proper functioning of the plant. There are two different kinds of bulking:
-viscous bulking, common in food industries such as wineries, milk factories and sugar factories, which have a wastewater rich in carbon but poor in nitrogen and phosphorus.
-filamentous bulking, the most frequent, due to an excessive presence of filamentous bacteria. Bacteria are normally found in the sludge, but if they overgrow they become the cause of sedimentation problems.

This disease can be caused by many factors, first at all the lack of nutrients and the resulting unbalance of the BOD5:N:P relation, pH, the sudden variation in the wastewater parameters and so on. If the cause is known, the corrective action will be focused on its removal.

A the traditionally adopted solution is represented by administering a selection of bacteria. Biodermol Ambiente for over 60 years is involved in the development, production and use of enzymes and microorganisms. Thanks to the synergical action of products intaking nutrients and selected microorganisms, BIOENZIME line represents a fundamental help to the reactivation of the wastewater treatment plant after a bulking issue.
