The limitation of gas serra emissions commitment taken in 2009 by UE has been strengthened in 2015 with the Paris Agreement that saw the birth of "Europe 2020" strategy: this agreement establishes three goals (named 20-20-20 goals) for the economic and climatic policy:
  • Reduction of gas serra emissions of at least 20% compared to 1990.
  • Increase the renewable energy share of 20% compred to final energy consuption.
  • Policies directed to a 20% energetic efficiency increase.
Thanks to these plans, UE is making progress toward his efficiency energetic goal:
  • Renewable energy is increasing and in 2015 (last detections available) has provided the 16,7% of the final gross energy consuption. In 2004 the value was 8,4%.
  • Solid, liquid ed gaseous biofuels still represent the major energy share.
  • 2020 goal for the energetic consuption has already been achieved while for the primary energy, UE has to reach a further 3,1% reduction between 2015 and 2020. In 2015 UE consumed 10,7% less of primary energy compared to 2005.
  • Between 2005 and 2015, agricolture, forestry and industry have reduced final energy consuption by over a quarter, while the residential consuption remained stable.
